Fancy a ski trip this winter? Time to get planning!
With Florida humidity in full swing and air conditioners on full blast, cold weather activities probably aren’t at the forefront of your mind at the moment. But if you plan on booking a ski vacation this winter, here are a few tips to help you make the most of your snow-filled getaway.
Pick an experience destination
Ski resorts offer far more than just a place to simply ski or sleep. In addition to the convenience of staying on the property, guests have access to a variety of benefits including non-ski activities (spas, skating, yoga and shopping), professional staff and instruction, and special perks like early access to the slopes and all-inclusive options. And don’t forget the fine dining and spectacular views.
Why does that matter? Because even the most avid of skiers needs a break in the action! If for no other reason than to recharge… plus some members of your party may not be able to ski or have the same interest level. Choosing a place to stay with experiences for everyone is so important.
Mix it up
Many skiers have their favorite spots that they return to every year. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but there’s an entire country of mountains and fresh powder waiting for you if you just know where to look. With more than 450 ski resorts in the U.S. alone, it’s almost unconscionable not to explore something new once in a while Colorado, Utah, Vermont and California may be among the most popular states for skiers, but have you thought about what the slopes are like in Idaho, Massachusetts or even New Mexico, which are considered hidden gems.
Consider alternate forms of transportation
While skiing may be the main purpose of your vacation, why not try another way to experience the slopes that doesn’t involve actual skiing? Many consider snowboarding a good option for those who like to show off their powder skills, as well as skiing novices who may find it easier to maneuver a snowboard than two skis. Snowmobiling is fun for family members of all ages; though, some resorts may have age requirements for driving. Sledding, tobogganing and tubing are especially popular for families with children. And have you heard of fat biking? Similar to a mountain bike (makes sense), a fat bike is made for riding in snow, including downhill, with 3.8-inch tires and tread more like car tires than a bike’s (and talk about a workout!).
